Ethiopian Airlines celebrated International Women’s Day in a unique way. Celebrated annually on March 8th, the national airline wanted to make this a memorable day for its crew members. It decided to entrust the controls of its aircraft to an all-female crew, from the captain and cabin crew to the pilots. These women were responsible for organizing and operating eight flights connecting Addis Ababa Bole to destinations across three continents: Dire Dawa, Accra, Nairobi, Djibouti, Cairo, and Windhoek in Africa; Mumbai in Asia; and Frankfurt in Europe.
The ground handling team was also composed entirely of women, including ground staff and flight technicians.
At a reception held at Addis Ababa airport in the presence of the airline’s executives, including Mesfin Tasew, the CEO of Ethiopian Airlines, the latter stated: “40% of the members making up our airline’s workforce are women, so we want to take this opportunity to highlight their crucial role in the smooth running of operations within Ethiopian Airlines, both on the ground and in the air.”
